medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. August) is the feast day of:
Claudius, Asterius, Neon, Domnina, and Theonilla (d. c. 303)
Asterius, Claudius, and Neon were brothers who lived in Aegea. They
were denounced as Christians by their stepmother and were crucified.
At the same time, the Christian women Domnina and Theonilla were
flogged to death.
Eugene (Eoghan) (d. c. 618) Legend reports that Eugene was a native
of Leinster, kidnapped and enslaved as a child (first in Britain and
then in Brittany). He was eventually released and returned to
Ireland, after which he became a monk and eventually settled with his
disciples at Ardstraw.
Ebbe the Younger (d. 870) Ebbe was abbess of the double monastery of
Coldingham (Berwickshire, Scotland). When word came that Vikings
were about to raid the community, she talked her nuns into cutting
off their own noses and upper lips to discourage rape. They all did
so, and the Vikings were so disgusted that they shut the nuns up in
their convent and burned them all.
A modern saint: Rose of Lima (d. 1586) Isabel de Santa Maria de
Flores was born at Lima (Peru) to Spanish parents. She resisted her
parents' efforts to marry her off and became a recluse in a garden
shack. She became a famous mystic. R. was canonized in 1671, the
first recognized saint of the New World. She is the patroness of
South America.
