medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. July) is the feast day of:
Athenogenes (d. c. 305) Athenogenes was a theologian and bishop of
Sebaste (Armenia). He and ten of his flock were burned to death
during Diocletian's persecution.
Eustathius of Antioch (d. c. 340) Eustathius was bishop of Beroea
(Syria) before becoming patriarch of Antioch in c. 323. He was an
adamant opponent of Arianism, banishing any clergy he suspected of
Arian leanings and denouncing Eusebius of Caesarea for favoring Arian
teachings. Eusebius responded by getting Constantine to depose
Eustathius in c. 330; he was exiled to Thrace. His people thought so
highly of him that they wouldn't accept his Arian successor---or St.
Meletius, the compromise bishop who was then suggested. This led to
the century-long Meletian schism.
Helier (6th cent.) Helier was born at Tongres (Belgium). He became
a hermit on the Isle of Jersey, where he was murdered by a band of
robbers.
Reinildis (d. c. 680) Reinildis was a daughter of Count Witger and
St. Amalberga. Both of her parents became religious, and R. went on
a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. When she finally got back (seven
years later) she devoted herself to charitable works---until she and
two companions were killed by "marauding barbarians," probably at
Kontich near Antwerp.
Fulrad (d. 784) An Alsatian who became a monk, Fulrad founded
several monasteries before being elected abbot of St-Denis in 750.
He was very active in Carolingian service (he and St. Burchard are
the ones who went to Rome to win papal approval for Pepin the Short
usurping the Frankish throne).
A modern saint: Bartholomew dos Martyres (blessed) (d. 1590) A
native of Lisbon, Bartholomew entered the Dominican order in 1528,
after his education teaching philosophy and theology and becoming
royal preacher. In 1559 he became bishop of Braga and reformed the
diocese. He was beatified in 2001.
