medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. July) is the feast day of:
Praxedes (c. 170?) According to legend, Praxedes was the daughter of
a Roman senator and sister of St. Pudentiana. She helped care for
and hide Christians during Marcus Aurelius' persecution of Christians.
Victor of Marseilles (d. c. 290) An account of uncertain historicity
tells that Victor was a soldier in the Roman army stationed at
Marseilles. He was arrested as a Christian, tortured, imprisoned
(converting three guards in the process), tortured again, and finally
crushed under a millstone *and* beheaded. His tomb was one of the
most popular pilgrimage centers in Gaul, and the monastery of St.
Victor at Marseilles was a major reform center in the central Middle
Ages.
A modern saint: Lawrence of Brindisi (d. 1619) Caesare de Rossi, the
future Lawrence, was a native of Brindisi. He became a Capuchin at
age 16, became a successful preacher, and served five terms as
definitor general of his order before becoming vicar general in 1602
(he refused re-election in 1605). He seems to have spent most of his
time trying to convert Lutherans in Germany, preaching crusades
against the Turks, and founding friaries. His most important
writings are the nine volumes of his sermons. L. was canonized in
1881 and named a doctor of the church in 1959.
