medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. July) is the feast day of:
Abdon and Sennen (d. c. 303) Abdon and Sennen were Persian nobles,
but killed in Diocletian's persecution rather than in the great
Persian persecution of Sapur II. They were arrested and brought to
Rome, where they were thrown to the beasts in the arena. The beasts
were uninterested, so gladiators were sent in to hack the pair to
pieces.
Julitta of Caesarea (d. c. 303) Julitta was a widow of Caesarea in
Cappadocia. She was wealthy and went to court to defend her estate
from a neighbor's claims. The neighbor lost the court case and in a
fit of pique denounced J. as a Christian. Sure enough, she refused
to make a sacrifice to the state gods, so her estates were given to
the informer and she was burned to death.
Peter Chrysologus (d. c. 450) Peter was born at Imola (Italy). He
became bishop of Ravenna and set about cleaning up morals and
practices in his city, especially targetting the remaining
non-Christian population. He was such a good preacher that he got
the nickname "chrysologos" (golden-worded), which among other things
won him the patronage of Empress Galla Placidia. P. was declared a
doctor of the church in 1729.
A modern saint: Leopold Bogdan Mandic (d. 1942) Bogdan Mandic was
from Dalmatia. He became a Capuchin in 1884, taking the name
Leopold. He really wanted to be a missionary in eastern Europe, but
wasn't allowed to because of his poor health (he was only 4 ft. 5
inches tall, frail, and increasingly crippled with arthritis). He
ended up spending most of his ministry in Padua where he was in
incredible demand as a confessor and spiritual advisor. He clearly
was tougher than his superiors thought he was, because he survived
nearly 40 years of sitting in a confessional box for 12 hours a day.
He was beatified in 1976 and canonized in 1983.
