medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. July) is the feast day of:
The seven joys of Mary. Already celebrated in the Middle Ages, this
became an official RC feast in 1906 (Pius X). Mary's official joys
are: the annunciation, the visitation, the birth of Jesus, the visit
of the magi, finding Jesus in the Temple after he had been lost, the
resurrection, and Mary's own assumption into heaven.
Dominica (d. c. 303) Dominica was a martyr of Tropea (Campania).
Her legend tells that she went around destroying cult statues in the
town, for which she was sentenced to be thrown to the beasts. The
beasts refused to have anything to do with her in the arena, so the
authorities had her beheaded instead.
Athanasius the Athonite (d. 1000) Athanasius was born at Trebizond
and became a monk in Bithynia. To avoid becoming abbot there, A.
went on to Mt. Athos, where he began the first monastery in 961. A.
had to deal with hostility from hermits already at Athos---they
attempted to murder him twice---but Emperor John Tzimisces protected
him. By the end of his life, A. was superior over 58 communities of
monks and hermits on Athos.
William of Hirsau (d. 1091) William was a child oblate at the
monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg. He rose in time to be prior
there, and in 1069 was sent to be abbot of Hirsau. Under W., Hirsau
became a center for Cluniac-style reform in Germany, and its monks
won notoriety (most notably of all W. himself) as supporters of the
Gregorian reform.
Antony Zaccaria (d. 1539) Antony Zaccaria was a native of Cremona
who studied medicine at Padua. He became practice as a doctor, but
decided to become a priest and was ordained in 1528. In 1530 he and
two companions founded the Barnabites (Clerics Regular of St. Paul),
dedicated to reviving spirituality in the church. The new
congregation was approved in 1533 with AZ as first provost general.
He was canonized in 1897.
