medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Personally, I object to the way that modern "Liturgists" break the Rite down
into "The Liturgy of the Word" and "The Liturgy of the Eucharist." So far as I
am concerned, the whole Rite is the Liturgy of the Eucharist. I would think
that a more theologically/liturgically appropriate terminology (if one wishes
to sub-divide the Rite) would be The Litugy of the Word and The Liturgy of the
Sacrament. Some refer to receiving Holy Communion as "receiving the
Eucharist." I think that is a verbal shorthand for saying "receiving the
Eucharistic Species." One can't eat the Eucharist. (Well, maybe, if one ate
the Sacramentary/Missal. ;)
