Well, it's not really a kill-joy thing. The parties involved *must* spit on
the floor and on the devil, like it or not. The thing is though that this
spitting comes immediately after three lengthy and very agressive exorcisms.
If the Abbot of Hell was slumbering before the baptism and not taking any
interest, the exorcisms directed against him (or her?) are sure to catch his
attention and bring him into the church with a rush of sulphorous air. So
it takes a little bit of courage to spit on him (or her) and incur his wrath
and malediction for ever after....
