medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. May) is the feast day of:
Constantine I (d. 337) I expect the story is familiar to
listmembers: Constantine decided to usurp the imperial throne after
his father's death (despite Diocletian's careful organization of the
tetrarchy); he won the ensuing civil war---thanks to special help
from the Christian God at the Milvian Bridge in 312. Within a few
months he had issued the Edict of Milan, making Christianity
legal---and he then proceeded to privilege his preferred religion in
every way he could think of. The rest is history.
Serapion the Sindonite (d. c. 356) Serapion was one of the fathers
of the Egyptian desert, renowned for charity and complete lack of
possessions. The only thing he seems to have owned was a linen sheet
(sindon) that he wore wrapped around him.
Secundus of Alexandria and companions (d. 357) More Alexandrians
seem to have been killed because of Athanasius than ever died before
the "peace of the Church" was established. Secundus was an
Alexandrian priest, killed along with a large number of Athanasius
supporters when Athanasius was forced into exile for the third
time---the new (Arian) Patriarch George had to use force to establish
himself.
Ageranus and Companions (d. 888) Ageranus (Ayran) was a monk of Beze
(Cote d'Or, France), left behind with six others when his community
fled from a viking raid. All seven were killed.
Godric of Finchale (d. 1170) Godric was from Walpole in Norfolk. He
was a merchant and pilgrim, then settled down as a hermit at Finchale
near Durham. He spent 60 years leading a healthful life (keeping
clean by praying while immersed up to his neck in the river Wear,
etc.) and famous for his affinity with animals.
