Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
"Legends (all much later) tell that she helped care for St.
Peter during his time in Rome..."
I found on line a newspaper or journal article disputing the fact that
Saint Peter ever was in Rome. If I can find it again, I'll send the
URL. Has any list member ever come across this idea? Or is this widely
accepted and I'm just out of the loop?
I'm not sure whether by 'this idea' you mean the woman who helped Peter
in Rome, or that his residence in Rome has been doubted. Certainly it
has been challenged from time to time, usually by those who do not
accept Papal claim to primacy in the Church. The Oxford Dictionary of
the Christian Church, which is usually a good place to start, says:
"The tradition connecting Peter with Rome is early and unrivalled.
Against it can be placed only the silence of the NT; but even here Rom.
15:20-2 may point to the presence of another Apostle in Rome before
Paul wrote, while the identification of 'Babylon' in 1 Pet. 5:13 with
Rome seems highly probable. St Clement of Rome conjoins Peter and Paul
as the outstanding heroes of the Father and prob. implies that Peter
suffered martyrdom. St Ignatius uses words which suggest that Peter and
Paul were the Apostles of special authority for the Roman Church, and
St Irenaeus states definitely that they founded that Church and
instituted its episcopal succession. Other early witnesses to the
tradition are Gaius of Rome and Dionysius of Corinth, both cited by
Eusebius . . . There are historical grounds for believing that his tomb
in St Peter's, Rome, is authentic."
