Not quite. I can see pointing out the exquisite qualities of so-and-so's prose or brush technique. I'd hesitate to do the same with religion. However, I do allow myself the luxury of stating that William the Conqueror's conquest of England was one of the worst things ever to happen to France.
On a tangential issue, I find myself in the position of having to teach the most elementary catechism and Bible history to folks. One quite mature student thought Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem (i.e. Palm Sunday events) took place after the resurrection. And one student from a heavily Catholic country asked me what the Eucharist was. Of course, the latter may have been a language problem...
