Duke Albrecht II (never king, nor trying to be) was married to Jeanne de
Ferette (Pfirt), from a territory bordering the Habsburg possessions on
the upper Rhine.
>This is the point at which the Habsburgs are shifting their focus to Austria
>
They started to do so in the 1280ies. Albrecht I (as duke of Austria and
Styria) and his sons were very busy there from the start, although
regarded as foreigners. The Ferette marriage shows how much they
remained interested in the Alsace/Upper Rhine region. Both their western
and their eastern territories were important for them throughout the
middle ages.
The counts of Montfort are mistaken as "Austrian" in retrospect, because
parts of their possessions in the region of lake Constance are present
day Austrian territory, and an Austrian province (Bundesland) uses their
coat of arms. But in the 12th and 13th centuries Austria had nothing to
do at all with this region. Only later, there were Montforts in Styria
as followers of the Habsburg dukes.
Best, h.w.
