medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. April) is the feast day of:
Encratia (Engracia) (d. c. 304) A particularly tough early martyr.
According to her legend, Encratia was a young (and doubtless
beautiful) virgin, tortured at Zaragoza---disembowelled and one
breast hacked off, no less---but survived the treatment (although she
is regarded as a martyr).
Vasius (Vaise) (d. c. 500) Vasius was a rich citizen of Saintes
(France) who got into the habit of giving his property to the poor.
This annoyed V's kinsmen so much that they murdered him.
Fructuosus of Braga (d. 665) Fructuosus was a Visigothic noble in
Spain who became a hermit and founded the monastery of Complutum (and
nine other monasteries---he apparently attracted a lot of disciples)
and then became a hermit again. In 656 he was made archbishop of
Braga (Portugal).
Magnus of Orkney (d. 1116) Magnus was a son of the earl of the
Orkneys. The king of Norway forced M to go raiding, but M refused to
fight and fled to the Scottish court where he lived a life of penance
(an odd place to do it). Later M returned to become co-earl of the
Orkneys with his cousin. But the cousin had M. murdered. For
political reasons, but M. was hailed as a martyr.
Drogo of Sebourg (d. 1186) Drogo was a native of Artois. When he
was twenty he inherited the family property, which he got rid of and
took up life as a wandering shepherd. Legend says that he made nine
pilgrimages to Rome before finally settling as a hermit near Sebourg
(in Hainault), where he lived on bread and water for 45 years.
Archangelo Canetuli (blessed) (d. 1513) Archangelo was from Bologna.
He was a canon regular, famed for miracles and "supernatural
charisms." He was archbishop-elect of Florence when he died.
