Chicago residents please correct me....
Kalamazoo is on the main Amtrak line from Detroit to Chicago, and the
train is reliable in the sense that it will always get you there, almost
certainly on the right day, and maybe even at the right time. Ann Arbor
is on the same line, and all my trips to Chicago are by train. Less
reliable than (say) Gatwick to London Bridge; but not as bad as
Aberystwyth to Birmingham on a Sunday.
One trouble with the train option is that O'Hare (airport) is well outside
of Chicago, and the train station is in the center of the city; you'd have
to find a way to get from one to the other. Both the Chicago Transit
Authority (CTA) 'blue line' (the 'el') and the Metra North Central Line make the
trip, the latter by a longer and more convoluted route (see
http://cbs2chicago.com/cruisin/local_story_095222436.html).
If you take the blue line, I think Clinton is the right stop; Union
Station is about two blocks away, as is the Greyhound bus station.
You'll also have to get from the downtown Kalamazoo train station to the
University, of course. But there are taxis--and it can even be walked
in a pinch, albeit not easily with luggage.

It is certainly possible to buy a ticket at the station; but I simply
do not know if it can always be done safely--i.e., with confidence that
all seats are not already booked. I always book.
> Of course, if anyone is driving from Chicago to K'zoo on May 5th
Sorry, coming from the other direction.
