Dear all,
Few days ago, Dr. Dewey said : "Folding and Fracturing of Rocks" and
"Principles of Physical Geology" still remain the the two great books in the
Earth Sciences. Precisely in the last one, (in my spanish version "El
descubrimiento de los mantos", page 752, Chapter 30) there are an
enlightening discussion , a delicacy for me, about several concepts that
involve thrusts, nappes, folds, interpretation problems, vertical tectonics
vs. horizontal tectonics, sedimentary facies (most of this problems still
remains) and the names of Escher, Argand, Bertrand, Heim, Calloway,
Lapworth, Törnebhom, Gressly, Wegmann, Goguel, Lugeon are related between
them. In 4 pages including drafts!. I suggest that we might read it and
continue discussing the term nappe. Our discipline and its very base is
rooted in the observations, maps, sections, interpretations and discussions
of those Geologists. Today those writings still are an exiting reading.
Best wishes.
Roberto
