Martin, is there a practical reason why your .dss files are 8Mb? While I
was doing field research last year, I regularly emailed one minute .dss
files to my girlfriend back home - those files were all under 1Mb.
A simple solution is to stop and re-start the DM-1 more often,
producing multiple files for a single interview. If this is infeasible,
another possible solution would be to use ftp (file transfer protocol)
to transfer the files between your computer and that of your
transcriptionists. There are several free programs out there with drag
and drop functionality.
As for editing smaller sections from the original audio files, I doubt
you'll be able to find a .dss editor. If file size is still important,
.mp3 would be your better choice. There are several free or inexpensive
audio editors available, which would also enable you to adjust for sound
quality (likely a good idea, depending on the microphone you use with
the DM-1).
Good luck!
