medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Fr Ambrose,
The statue of the Virgin I refer to is that of Majka Bozia Letnicka or Our
Lady of Letnica, a small Catholic mountain village situated in the Black
Mountains which form the Kosovo / Macedonian border. Thankfully, the shrine
and church are still intact. This was once a largely Croatian community but
over the past ten years or so most Croats have left and the village is now
populated largely by Albanian families. The liturgy is now celebrated in
Albanian (to cater for the new inhabitants), something which the small
remaining Croat population find difficult, given their presence in the area
for over seven hundred years.
I am very saddened to hear of the destruction of the wall image at Lyevish.
It brings into sharp focus once again the horrors of conflict and the
widespread destruction that it brings. We long for the day when peace will
reign in all hearts in this troubled region.
Best wishes,
Salvador Ryan
