medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It occurs to me that there might be a late imperial model for such a
ceremony. I will see what I can find on this.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
Grateful for any assistance.
According to Brasch (1989), ecclesiastical kissing was a gesture of
homage
and deference, far removed from its erotic roots. By the 11th century
as
Papel supremacy overtook imperial rulers and Christian monarchies,
Pope
Gregory VII (1073-1085) declared in the 'Dictate of the Pope' or
Dictatus
Papae 'that all princes shall kiss the foot of the pope alone.'
(Baldwin
,1970 ). I understand this gesture refers back to the Old Testament
and
the Hebrew belief of supremacy and victory over enemies. Foo kissing
was
adopted in the Middle Ages by many European regends as either a tribute
to
their authority or the simulation of servitude. Can anyone confirm
this,
with references?
Much appreciated
Cameron
