medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. January) is the feast day of:
Felix of Nola (d. c. 250) Felix was a native of Nola; his father was a
soldier from Syria. He became a priest and, thanks to his sufferings in
the Decian persecution, is sometimes venerated as a martyr. Felix was
fortunate in his devotees, attracting the devotion of Paulinus of Nola who
wrote about his special saint so well that he became one of the most
popular saints of southern Italy. Which didn't save him from the calendar
purge of 1969, when he was confined to local calendars.
Isaias, Sabas, and companions (d. 309) This is a group of 38 monks on Mt.
Sinai, massacred by raiding Bedouin.
Macrina the Elder (d. c. 340) Macrina was a native of Neocaesarea
(Pontus), and as a young woman became a disciple of St. Gregory the
Thaumaturge. During Diocletian's persecution she and her husband hid for
seven years in a forest on their estate. They suffered further persecution
under Licinius, but M. survived to teach her grandson, St. Basil.
Barbasymas and companions (d. 346) Barbasymas was bishop of
Seleucia-Ctesiphon when it wasn't a good thing to be a Christian in the
Persian capital. He and 16 companions were imprisoned for eleven months in
the reign of Shapur II. After torture, they were all martyred.
Datius of Milan (d. 552) Datius became bishop of Milan after 530. He had
to flee his see when the Arian Ostrogoths moved in; he went to
Constantinople, where he defended Pope Vigilius' policies in the Three
Chapters controversy.
Amadeus of Clermont (blessed) (d. c. 1150) Amadeus was lord of Hauterives
(France). He---and sixteen of his vassals---became Cistercians at
Bonnevaux. A. also went on to found four more monasteries.
