medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. January) is the feast day of:
Gregory of Langres (d. 539) Gregory was a Gallo-Roman noble. He served as
governor of the district around Autun, but after his wife died became
bishop of Langres, known for his gentleness and understanding (in strong
contrast to his behavior as governor). He was a great-uncle of Gregory of
Tours.
Ferreolus of Uzes (d. 581) Ferreolus, a native of Narbonne, became bishop
of Uzes (near Avignon). The most notable thing known about his life seems
to be that the king exiled F for three years because he tried to convert
the Jews of his diocese. F. also founded a monastery, for which he wrote a
rule.
Pharaildis (Varede, Verylde) (d. c. 740) Pharaildis is patron of the city
of Ghent. She appears to have been a native of Ghent, abused by her
husband because she snuck away to visit churches at night or because she
refused to consummate their marriage or perhaps both.
Rigobert (d. c. 745) Rigobert was abbot of Orbais, then became archbishop
of Rheims in 696. He was deposed by Charles Martel in 721 for opposing
confiscation of church lands. He ended up as a hermit.
Libentius (Liawizo) (d. 1013) Libentius was a Swabian who became bishop of
Hamburg-Bremen in 988. He is regarded as one of the apostles of the Slavs,
but was driven into exile by the Danes.
Stephen du Bourg (d. 1118) Stephen was a canon at Valence. He became a
hermit near Langres, but then became one of St. Bruno's first companions at
the new monastery of the Grande-Chartreuse. In 1116 he was sent as
founding abbot of the Carthusian monastery of Meyria.
Angela of Foligno (blessed) (d. 1309) Angela was a wealthy woman of
Foligno (near Rome) who had a religious conversion and became a Franciscan
tertiary. After her husband and all her children died, A. became the
leader of a large group of tertiaries, living a penitential life and
enjoying a great many mystical experiences (which she narrated to her
confessor and he published).
