TEACHING SKILLS

For a number of years librarians have been informally teaching their users how to exploit the wide variety of paper and electronic resources that are available to them. However, many librarians now find that they are expected to increase the amount of teaching that they do and to extend its range.
Managers often see the active development of Information Skills as an important way to enhance the status and profile of the library/learning resource centre. But how many librarians have had any formal training in how to plan and run an effective learning activity? And how many have had the opportunity to receive feedback on their facilitation skills?
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This two-day event provides the opportunity to consider how learning occurs and the implications that has for teaching. It will enhance participants' ability to plan and deliver effective sessions for groups of information users, building on their existing skills and strategies.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* identified some components of effective adult learning and related them to their own teaching priorities
* considered some relevant theories of learning and their implications for planning teaching sessions
* planned a learning activity
* practised and received feedback on skills necessary for teaching groups (micro-teaching)
* considered what makes a good facilitator of learning
WORKSHOP LEADER: Sharon Markless
Sharon has worked as a teacher both in secondary schools and further education. She currently works in higher education with teachers, lecturers and professionals to enhance their teaching. She is also a consultant and trainer with Information Management Associates.
