You may be interested in hearing about a new Master of Arts course in Design
Culture at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK.
This is a unique course that joins critical enquiry and creative thinking in
design. Applications are now being taken for this Masters course which
begins in October 2004. The course is 1 year for full-time students, 2
years for part-time students.
Drawing on related disciplines such as cultural studies, sociology and
cultural geography as well as design studies, it builds enquiry into the
role of design in contemporary society. Students develop a detailed
understanding of how design is practiced in the context of globalisation,
advanced technologies, political economy and postmodern lifestyles, how it
is mediated to its public and how, ultimately it is consumed.
Taking into account real-life scenarios, all forms of design are included in
its interdisciplinary approach, from advertising to architecture, from
products to urban planning. In addition, the course explores further
possibilities for design practice, research and conceptual development.
Applications are invited from design graduates seeking an enriched
understanding of their specialism. This course is also suitable for students
coming from the course's related academic fields who have a strong interest
in design issues.
