I have found the following references to be really helpful in understanding
camelid fiber traded/production in Peru/Bolivia. They are both fabulous
pieces.
KELGARD, D. S. 1991.At Work in the Fields of the Lords: The Organization of
the Production of Camelid Fiber in the Inca Empire. Thesis (Ph. D.),
University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
DRANSART, P. Z. (2002). Earth, Water, Fleece and Fabric: An Ethnography and
Archaeology of Andean Camelid Herding. Routledge, London.
Also, Jane Wheeler has quite a bit published. I only have these two
references at hand:
WHEELER, J. C., A. J. F. RUSSEL, AND H. REDDEN. (1995). Llamas and Alpacas:
Pre-Conquest Breeds and Post-Conquest Hybrids, Journal of Archaeological
Science 22:833-840.
WHEELER, J. C. (1995). Evolution and the Present Situation of the South
American Camelidae, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society 54:271-295.
Jonathan Kent's dissertation covers the osteometrics of camelids.
KENT, J. D. 1982.The Domestication and Exploitation of the South American
Camelids: Methods of Analysis and Their Application to Circum-Lacustrine
Archaeological Sites in Bolivia and Peru. Dissertation, Washington
University, St. Louis.
Hope that helps get you started...Also, if you happen to find any references
on camelid fiber trade/production, I would be one happy recipient of such
information.

Subject: [ZOOARCH] Fur and Wool Trade in New World
Dear all,
Could anyone help me out with references to archaeological evidence for
trade in furs/animal fibres etc in the New World? For example, is there
much regarding alpaca or llama?
IŽd also be interested to hear about any recent work on population
recognition (e.g. metric and non-metric variation), also in the New World.
Thanks
Steve Ashby
