I think Dick's suggestion makes sense but it makes one assumption that
it think should be the first consideration. Rather than specifying who
the other person in the elevator is, the first question might well be
"Who should care about this?" "Why"--the one-minute pitch in
question--is, of course, the next question.
For many people a variant--who won't care about this and do you care
that they don't--is worthwhile. I have the impression that some design
researchers are frustrated that working designers don't know or care
about their work. The relation of the research to working designers
doesn't need to be central but it's at least worth mentioning so people
won't be shocked or disappointed when they discover the design/design
research disconnect.
