As well as Kate Fernie's suggestion of the VADS resources, you might
like to check some references in a message (quoted below) that was sent
to the ARCHIVES-NRA list at JISCMAIL by Grant Young of TASI. (As he says
that he wants other people's views I trust that he will not mind my
forwarding this message to FISH.)
Unfortunately the SEPIA Web pages that he refers to are not accessible
this morning, but it is worth looking into when they come back. There
are a few other references to this project available by asking Google
for SEPIADES.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a way of indexing the content
of images rather than their technical characteristics, you presumably
need an indexing vocabulary that is appropriate to the subject matter.
The same vocabulary would be appropriate for indexing buildings or
images of buildings, wouldn't it? The problem then is that there are so
many special and general thesauri and classification systems to choose
from. Most "metadata" schemes just have a field labelled "subject",
which rather begs the question. You can choose any scheme you like so
long as you say what it is. We are a long way from standardisation in
this area, I'm afraid.
