Hi Chris,
I find film narratives taking place in trains
fascinating. There is a certain rhythm and pace that
seems to "artificially" carry the story forward, even
if no new information is conveyed happens. Would be
interesting to analyse the editing in relation to the
rhythm of the train in these films (I might edit my
next short film on a train to see the effect). Apart
from this you have the notion of a journey, thus of a
beginning and an end, and of course you constantly see
a "moving image" in the train windows. Also, in many
train films different compartments/wagons are specific
for different characters and scenes. A very
"cinematic" means of transport.
These train films come to mind:
Murder on the Orient Express (Sidney Lumet)
Narrow Margin (Peter Hyams)
The Train (J. Frankenheimer)
Train de Vie (Radu Mihaeleanu)
Silver Streak (Arthur Hiller)
La Roue (Abel Gance)
The Cassandra Crossing (George P. Cosmatos)
Von Ryan's Express (Mark Robson)
Terror Train (Roger Spottiswoode)
Horror Express (Eugenio Martín)
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (Freddie Francis)
The Tall Target (Anthony Mann)
