Dear Zooarchers,
It is with great sorrow that I have to announce the death today of Judy
Cartledge. She had been ill for sometime and died after a long struggle with
cancer.
She will be known to many of us as a genuinely cheery and helpful soul.
Judy studied at Sheffield University in the late 70s and 80s. Her MPhil
considered faunal studies in Northern Italy and her PhD was on urban faunal
samples in Norwich, later whilst employed at West Yorkshire Archaeology Services
she worked on material from Chester.
For the past 10 years or so she worked freelance which allowed her to spend
more time with her children and whilst at Sheffield I spent many hours in the
bone lab at Sheffield with her. She was both good company and a fountain of
knowledge (a remember a top tip for metapodia identification to this day). She
was particuarly good at bird bones and latterly spent much time considering the
gulls and gullimots of our Hebridean sites. She will be missed.
