Dear Zooarch,
The annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America will be
held January 5-8, 2006 in Montreal, Canada. I realize that this is over
a year away (the upcoming meeting will be in Boston this January);
however, the deadline to submit abstracts and colloquia for the Montreal
meeting is March 2005. I should like to organize a session on
Osteoarchaeology in the Classical Context. The focus would see both
human osteologists and zooarchaeologists come together to discuss the
contributions of their disciplines in shaping the course of classical
archaeology today (and in the future). There is much overlap among these
disciplines, but not always effective communication between them, and
(especially here in North America) the added hurdle of osteologists
being housed in anthropology departments, which are separated from
classics departments in many cases. There have been huge advances in
the osteoarchaeological world in issues such as taphonomy, paleodiet,
isotopic research, quantification, etc. that are not always integrated
fully in classical archaeology. I envision this AIA session in Montreal
to tackle this issue of communication between these disciplines.
Ideally, it would be nice to have papers that span the scope of the
International Journal of Osteoarchaeology (e.g., paleopathology,
physical anthropology, epidemiology, chemical analysis, exploitation of
animal resources, taphonomy), since the intention is to submit the
papers here for publication consideration.
Those interested in contributing or participating should send me an
e-mail message. Please forward this message to any physical
anthropologists who might be interested as well.
Montreal is a beautiful city too (and this is not simply my Canadian
bias showing through) -- so this is a great chance to visit or revist
the city (as well as helping advance the world of bones in the classical
context).
Best wishes,
Michael MacKinnon
