(Apologies for cross-posting)
This one-day event on Blogs, Wikis, newsfeeds and instant messaging may be
of interest to the Web community.
Many list members may be familiar with these technologies and perhaps use
them on a small-scale. However deployment of such technologies on an
institutional basis will require addressing several issues including not
just the selection of the software but also clarifying the areas in which
the applications are to be used, issues such as support, training, security,
performance as well as legal issues, acceptable use policies, etc.
This day-long event is being organised jointly by UCISA and UKOLN. The
event will provide an overview of the areas and case studies of how the
technologies are currently being used. The main focus of the event is in
addressing the deployment issues so there will be plenty of opportunity for
discussion.
Hope to see you in Leeds.

For many institutions the main use of the world wide web is for the
publication of information, either for use by external visitors or by staff
and students within the institution.
However, as well as its role as a publishing tool the web is increasingly
being used as a communications channel. This may include realtime
communications between individuals or small groups using dedicated or web
based instant messaging tools; Blog software which can be used by
individuals to share their views of particular topics and solicit feedback
and collaborative authoring environments such as Wikis which enable groups
to collaborate in the development of web pages.
This workshop will provide an opportunity for delegates to gain an
understanding of these technologies and hear about how they can be used.
Delegates will also have an opportunity to explore the barriers to
successful use of such tools and to address the challenges which need to be
faced when deploying such tools in an institutional context.
