> Wanted: Volunteers for sleepover experiment
>
>
> First David Beckham was filmed while asleep for an art project - now it's your chance to lie down in the interests of art and science.
>
> As part of the Fierce! festival, up to 180 volunteers are needed for an experiment that will involve spending the night at Thinktank, Birmingham's museum of science and discovery at Millennium Point.
>
> The volunteers will be treated to an evening of entertainment, including a midnight tour of the galleries, short films and even a bit of comedy! Participants will also meet the men behind the project - artist Luke Jerram and composer Dan Jones - and learn more about their objectives.
>
> At 1.15am the guests will be gently lulled to sleep using sounds and silence in what is billed as 'Lullaby - a Dream Concert'.
>
> During the night the sleeping guests will be played short samples of sounds and music - composed by Dan - in a bid to affect their dreams. The musical content is being developed specifically for this event, in consultation with sleep psychologists. Guests will be asked to log their dreams and sleeping experiences from the night> '> s event.
>
> The music is designed to take people in and out of consciousness and will be played again before waking them fully at dawn.
>
> The Dream Concert is the second part of Luke and Dan's sleep experiment. The first part was the successful Sky Orchestra which took place at 6.30am this morning (Thursday 13 May). Five hot air balloons took off from Millennium Point and played music over a sleeping Birmingham.
> The city's reaction will be monitored by the artist and compiled after the Dream Concert at the end of the month.
>
> Bristol-based Luke Jerram fuses his artistic practice with studies of science and perception to build installation artworks; he also designs science experiments, makes art gifts and is employed for creative consultancy.
>
> "> It has been shown that 70% of dreams are anxiety based,> "> explains Luke. > "> We hope that through sound incorporation we can change that for the better.> ">
>
> Dan Jones has written scores for films such as the Oscar-nominated > "> Shadow of the Vampire> '> starring John Malkovich and David Attenborough> '> s > '> Life of Mammals> '> for the BBC - and he believes there could be a connection between the two.
>
> "> The similarity between films and dreams is fascinating,> "> he says. > "> I hope that, rather like scoring a film, the music and sound has a positive effect on the richness of people> '> s dreams, but there> '> s only one way to find out!> ">
>
> Sara Cridland, Events and Exhibitions Officer at Thinktank and Millennium Point says: "Both Thinktank and the artists promote creative scientific exploration and we are pleased to work together on such an event. This is one of the most unusual experiments we have staged here and it will be fascinating to see how people respond."
>
> The sleepover experiment starts at 10.00pm on Friday 28 May and finishes at 9.00am the next day. It is free and breakfast is provided. If you are at least 18 years of age and would like to take part, email your name, address and telephone number to [log in to unmask] or call the Thinktank box office on 0121 202 2222.
>
> Thinktank, the main visitor attraction at Millennium Point, has ten galleries over four floors and more than 200 interactive exhibits, many of them unique - including eMo the emotional robot that learns human expressions as it interacts with visitors.
>
> Millennium Point is easy to get to. It's less than 10 minutes walk from the Bullring or Moor Street Station and about 15 minutes from New Street Station. For drivers, Millennium Point's competitively priced car park is off Jennens Road (the A47), just off the inner ring road junction 15 - follow the brown tourist information signs to Thinktank at Millennium Point.>
>
> For more information visit www.thinktank.ac or call the box office on 0121 202 2222.
>
> For more information on Luke Jerram and his work visit www.lukejerram.com and for more information on Dan Jones visit www.fabermusic.co.uk. This event is in collaboration with Fierce Earth: www.fierceearth.com 0121 244 8084 and has been made possible due to the generosity of IKEA, Wednesbury, who are promoting a complete bedroom range and have re-built their bedroom department.
