The University of Newcastle, Australia has for two years been constantly in the media over a 'plagiarism scandal'. The Chancellor, VIce Chancellor and other academics have since left the University. Currently past and present academics, almost all very senior executives, are before the State Corruption Commission over their handling of the plagiarism case. Faced with such an intense assault on its reputation, the University commissioned a report by St James Ethics Centre and from this report developed an institution wide system to promote acdemic ethics and integrity and transparently and openly deal with misconduct. The following Symposium is about the Newcastle story and the issues involved in attempting major cultural change in a University.
