I think 'academic integrity' is the key to this. Plagiarism is (part of)
the opposite of academic integrity. As such it is not just one simple
concept to be easily defined. We need to be clear what academic
integrity is before we can explain clearly what its negative counterpart
is.
There are (at least) two aspects, i.e. two contexts in which I need to
produce "all my own work" - and others will know better than I what to
call them. Their opposites (plagiarism) are arguably more similar than
the activities themselves.
Academic endeavour (research?) - developing and expressing truly
new ideas, findings etc. (opposite: someone else's old ones)
Learning - Proving that I have grasped a piece of teaching/training by
expressing it in my own words or succeeding at a task (opposite:
faking knowledge by using someone else's words or output)
