Dear Gunnar
thanks for your post. i think your question is a very difficult one, as i
understand, it has to do with how one defines 'design' and which design
(research) communities one finds oneself. my universe is small, i only
belong to this particular community. my research area is on the formal
characteristics of outcome of user study for design.
you seem to be a bit surprised, if not appalled, to find that i have not
heard of Wallpaper of Metropolis, and i have met an american professor who
lamented how so few design schools in the states introduce 'design
methods' (john chris jones) to their students.
i am not interested in compartmentalizing design communities, but i think
it is a mistake not to recognize that design discourse, design literature,
design researchers vary depending on particular communities and that
sometimes it is very puzzling to find some characterization that doesn't
seem to apply but that gets generalized.
yes, i have heard of eye and emigre...and i am also aware of your work,
and the serie of publications on graphic design (education) coming out
from the states ... if this makes me closer to the designers, the design
fields, or the cultures of design that you are thinking of.
