Hi,
I think that Godard's _Two or Three Things I Know About Her_ is an
unsurpassed meditation on & exploration of this relationship: 'her'
being announced at the very beginning as both Paris and the main
character- Juliette. There are so many different effects / techniques
used to try to achieve this relation, and so many levels at which it
operates. E.g., there is the causality of social forces acting on the
individual, parallells between Juliette' hopes and dreams and the shots
of roads and buildings under construction, and the 360 degree camera
movements which situate the characters' verbal and facial expressions of
the innermost selves.
More generally, aren't montage / collage often considered to be almost
direct images of the interior world? Finally, I'd argue that the film
also asks the viewer to reflect on their relation to it and to cinema at
large - so another level at which it relates inner and outer perhaps.
