3 RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS (3 years)
£11,000 p.a. maintenance grant + fees
The Regenerating Economy and Society research programme will support the
regeneration of the Tees Valley with evidence on the how to respond to the
key challenges facing this part of North East England. Three PhD
studentships are planned in order to contribute to the programme, starting
in September or October 2004:

University’s International Centre for Regional Regeneration and
Development Studies (ICRRDS) on the Queen’s Campus in Stockton-on-Tees.
This study of economic clusters significant to the future development of
the Tees Valley will gather evidence from interviews and questionnaires
with local firms to guide policies for cluster development.
Entrepreneurship and renewal (ref TVP02), based at Teesside Business
School on the University of Teesside’s Middlesbrough campus. This study of
barriers to entrepreneurial activity and how to overcome them will use
comparative policy analysis and stakeholder interviews to inform policies
and practice to increase entrepreneurship in the Tees Valley.
Schools, education and social exclusion (ref TVP03), based at ICRRDS on
Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton-on-Tees. This study of the
relative contributions of neighbourhood and school effects to the
under/achievement of young people in the Tees Valley will use findings
from multivariate analysis of school results and neighbourhood data to
inform area-based regeneration programmes and schools’ own practices in
raising educational aspirations and achievement.
The research programme is a collaboration between the Tees Valley
Partnership, the strategic multi-agency forum that leads the sub-region’s
