medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. December) is the feast day of:
Migdonius and Mardonius (d. 303) Diocletian purged the imperial court at
Nicomedia when he started persecuting Christians; these two officials
refused to apostasize. Migdonius was burned alive; Mardonus was drowned in
a well.
Dagobert II of Austrasia (d. 679) This Frankish king was a son of King St.
Sigisbert III. After his father's death, Dagobert was banished and spent
time in an Irish monastery, but he was recalled and made king in 675. As
king, he founded several monasteries. D. was killed by Mayor of the Palace
Ebroin's orders (he seems to be the villain in a lot of these early
Frankish saints' stories), and was regarded as a martyr.
Mazota (8th cent.?) Legend tells that Mazota was the superior of 19 Irish
nuns who settled at Abernethy near Perth (Scotland).
Hartmann (blessed) (d. 1164) Hartmann was from near Passau (Ausria). He
became head of the Salzburg cathedral chapter in 1122 after being raised to
be an Augustinian canon, and became bishop of Brixon in 1140. He managed
to get along with both Frederick Barbarossa and the pope, and was even
popular with the poor people of his diocese. H. founded the Augustinian
monastery of Neustift near Brixen.
Thorlak Thorhallsson (d. 1193) Thorlak was an Icelander who studied at
Paris and became a canon regular before becoming bishop of Sklholt in 1174.
He was a firm opponent of simony and clerical concubinage. The Althing
declared Thorlak a saint in 1198.
John Wacienga (d. 1473) John was from Kenty in Silesia (Poland). After
graduating from the university of Cracow he became a professor of theology
there. He tuaght until his death (at the age of c. 83), regularly sharing
his income with the poor. He was cnonized in 1767.
