medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi all,
If you are in the UK you might have been lucky enough to see the recent TV
dramatisation 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer'. Here is an excerpt of
dialogue -
(The king’s advisor)
We have found an ancient law which declares that it is treason to
acknowledge any higher authority than the will of the king. It is
treasonable to say that the pope is a higher authority than the king.
Henry:
Where does this law come from?
Advisor:
It was discovered by doctors of divinity at our universities and dates from
the time of King John.
Henry:
And you are satisfied that it is valid?
Advisor:
Absolutely, my Lord.
----
I have oft heard about this 'ancient law' but can anyone tell me what law is
being referred to here?
thanks
Julien
