Martin of Tours died in 397 AD if I recall, the same year that Ninian's
church at Whithorn was consecrated and dedicated to him.
Is it possible that Cianan was a graduate of the teaching centre Ninian
built up at Whithorn? Some kind of statement that "He studied at St
Martin's" cd easily transmute into "He studied with St Martin." Though why
that shd attach to Cianan and not to all the other Irish, British, Pictish
students who passed through Ninian's hands is another matter.
