medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Phyllis,
The Benedictine abbey church of Saint-Jacques at Liège was founded in 1015 by Bishop Baldéric. It was secularized and became a collegiate church in 1725, and this until its closing in 1797 by the revolutionaries.
There is a short description of the church in 'Architecture gothique. Belgique', by Marjan Buyle, T. Coomans, J. Esther, and L.F. Genicot (Bruxelles, Ed. Racine, 1997), but it foucuses mainly on its early 16th-century re-construction (nice pictures though).
One of the best ways to find information - references on the subject is searching on the BN-Opaline Catalogue: search under 'architecture, Belgique' or 'architecture, Brabant'. I tried this morning, and I found many relevant references.
There is a pretty good 'introductive' Website on Saint-Jacques church, and it is well illustrated:

For more pictures, your friend should also consider the 'Institut Royal du Patrimoine artistique de Belgique' Website :

htm
This is an excellent website, I would say the Belgian equivalent of the French 'Base mémoire'.
All the best.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear fellow list-members:
My medievalist art historian friend has asked me, since you were so helpful
with her last query a month or so ago, to see if anyone on the list could
tell her how to find out the religious order to which St. Jacob's church in
Liege belonged.
We have a truly lousy university library here, and no better resources
within several hours, so it would be greatly appreciated if somebody could
come up with 1) the information in question, and 2) a citation of the
source of information.
More generally: is there a relatively easy way to find information like this?
Many thanks,
Phyllis
Dr. Phyllis G. Jestice
