medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi! I've been reading the list now for a couple of years, but this is my
first inquiry. It wouldn't be necessary even now, if it wasn't that Robert
Kraft and I had a friendly argument today. It regards the New Testament
Pseudepigrapha THE ASCENSION OF ISAIAH, chapter 11 vss. 7-9. "And it came to
pass that when they were alone (Joseph and Mary) that Mary straight-way looked
with her eyes and saw a small babe, and she was astonished. And after she had
been astonished, her womb was found as formerly before she had conceived."
I said (without checking my sources first) that this was not a unique
account. He said, "I'd like to see a text." I'm sure I have encountered this
story before, but whether it was a separate tradition or one that can be traced
to this source, I don't know. Can anyone help me out, and make RAK buy the
drinks?
