Dear List member,
We would like to draw your attention to a short course on the use of laser
ablation ICP mass spectrometry for isotopic dating of U- and
Th-bearing accessory minerals. The short course will be one of many
offerings that will precede the Winter Conference on Plasma
Spectrochemistry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, January 5 - 10 2004. A short
course description follows. Detailed information about the short
course registration, conference program, subscription and deadlines can be
found at the conference website

U-Th-Pb Dating of Geological Samples by Laser Ablation ICP Mass Spectrometry
(Short course ST-19, Jan Kosler and Mike Tubrett)
January 3, 2004, Fort Lauderdale, Florida (reduced registration fees before
October 10, 2003)
This course will describe the techniques used to obtain isotopic ages of U-
and Th-bearing minerals. The topics will include: optimization of the laser
and ICP mass spectrometer for precise measurement of isotopic ratios,
effects of laser wavelength, laser beam parameters and size distribution of
ablated particles on elemental fractionation and signal stability,
correction procedures for laser-induced fractionation of
elements and instrument mass bias, corrections for initial Pb present in
the minerals, laser ablation dating by single- and multi-collector ICPMS
instruments and pros and cons of isotopic ratio measurements in pulse
counting and combined pulse counting/analog modes and most common
applications. Also discussed will be techniques of particle size
measurement and other methods used to study the elemental fractionation
during laser ablation ICPMS analysis of accessory minerals. The techniques
will be demonstrated on real data sets.
The short course is intended for all potential users of this dating
technique as well as ICPMS lab managers.
