medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am trying to analyse Augustine's attitude not to the category of
saints
but to the utility of saintly intercession. I just read the Enchiridion
and
was struck by the existence of saints as a category with no reference to
their utility to the pious worshipper as intercessors. Indeed
Augustine's
discussion of the Lord's prayer suggests that he favoured direct rather
than mediated appeal.
This strikes me as a different attitude to the cult from, say, Ambrose
of
Milan.
I would appreciate any references to A's writings on this topic (my own
reading is confined to the Confessions, the Enchiridion, and the De cura
pro mortuis gerenda) or to bibliography dealing with this topic.
