medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. October) is the feast day of:
Sarmata (d. 357) Sarmata was an Egyptian, a disciple of St. Antony. He
was killed in his monastery by raiding nomads, after which he was venerated
as a martyr.
Germanus of Besancon (d. c. 390) Bishop Germanus of Besancon, according to
legend, was murdered by Arians.
Canice (Cainnech, Kenneth) (d. c. 600) Canice was a native of Ulster. As
a monk he studied under Finian at Clonard and Cadoc in Wales before doing
extensive missionary work in Scotland and Ireland. He founded the
monastery of Kilkenny in Ireland, perhaps the monastery of St. Andrew's
Scotland, and several other communities.
Agilbert (d. c. 685) Agilbert was a Frankish monk who studied in Ireland
and then became a missionary to the West Saxons. He was consecrated bishop
of Dorchester-on-Thames, but the appointment roused dissension since he
couldn't speak English, so he left. A. was an important supporter of Roman
practices at the synod of Whitby. He returned to the kingdom of the Franks
and became bishop of Paris in 668.
Juliana of Pavilly (d. c. 730) Juliana was a servant who became a nun at
Pavilly (what is now Normandy). In timeshe became abbess, and won the
community's affection to the point that she became known as "the little
sister of Jesus."
Bruno of Cologne (d. 965) Bruno was the youngest brother of German
king/emperor Otto I. He was well-educated and in 951 became Otto I's
chancellor (at the age of about 26). In 953 he was appointed duke of
Lorraine *and* archbishop of Cologne. Bruno encouraged education and
supported the Gorzian reform besides his very active political life.
