i don't know this one.

yes.

nicely understated.

Huizinga's Autumn of the Middle Ages
good choices.

for the High M.A. *my* undergraduate prof used a [then] new book which worked
quite well and remains with me to this day, having shaped my view of many
aspects of What Was Going On :
Friedrich Heer's _The medieval world: Europe, 1100-1350._
Cleveland, World Pub. Co. [1962] 365 p. illus.
Heer was an intellectual historian, and this is not a narrative history, but
rather a thematic survey, held together with a very interesting overall thesis
(basically, that in this key period Europe Came Together and then, from about
1200, was characterised by a progressive "closing down" of developmental
options, in all cultural and political aspects).
it is apparently still in print, but at an outrageous $19.00.
i see that there are plenty of cheap used copies available via Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/offering/list/-/B00005WEWL/all/ref=dp_pb_a/002-8456595-3693653
and, presumably, on other book sites as well.
the Southern wasn't available in '64, so we didn't use that, but the old
standby Huizinga was another text used.
i'd say that the Heer would fit quite nicely between Southern & Huizinga.
best,
christopher
