medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (well, Saturday) (25. October) is the feast day of:
Minias (Miniato) (d. c. 250) Minias was a Roman soldier at Florence, whose
comrades resented his efforts to evangelize them and got him beheaded. The
great monastery of San Miniato grew up around his shrine.
Crispin and Crispinian (d. c. 285) Associated with martial valor because
the Battle of Agincourt fell on their feast day, Crispin and Crispinian
were actually shoemakers. Legend says that they were beheaded at Soissons;
historical probability is that they were Roman martyrs whose relics were
later translated to Soissons. One legend, by the way, tells that they
lived in Faversham, England.
Chrysanthus & Daria (d. c. 300) Chrysanthus and Daria were martyrs of
Rome. Later legend tells that they were a married couple, an Egyptian and
a Greek, who were buried alive in a sandpit duing the reign of Numerian
(during which there wasn't actually any persecution). Their cult was
limited to local calendars in 1969.
Martyrius and Marcian (d. 351) Martyrius was a subdeacon and chorister
from Constantinople. They preached there against Arianism at a time when
the Arians had imperial support, and ended up executed for sedition.
Fructus, Valentine, & Engratia (d. c. 715) The patron saints of Segovia,
these siblings were living a religious life at Sepulveda when the Arabs
invaded. Valentine and Engratia were killed; Fructus escaped and became a
hermit.
Theodoric of St-Hubert (d. 1087) Theodoric became a monk at Lobbes and in
time abbot of St. Hubert in the Ardennes (Belgium). He introduced Cluniac
customs both there and at Stablo-Malmedy.
