Environmental archaeology is a big problem as it isn't properly catered for
in either the monument thesaurus, the object thesaurus or the materials
thesaurus! I've been recording using 'Environmental sample' as an
intervention type in the event
record on HBSMR, and doing my best to shoehorn evidence into existing
thesaurus terms.
Our previous database had monument classes of 'Palaeoenvironmental' and
'Macrofossil' and monument types including 'Old Ground Surface' and
'Environmental Samples'. We also had a good range of material terms including
'Pollen', 'Charcoal', 'Organic', 'Turf' and 'Wood'.
English Heritage's Scientific Advisors have been trying to raise the issue of
how SMRs record environmental and scientific data at both regional and
national levels for several years now...so perhaps it's high time to sort out
the Thesaurus terms?

Subject: Environmental Data
Hello Folks
I was wondering how people are dealing with recording Environmental data
using the Monument Thesaurus. For example, we have a few examples of e.g.
Peat cores being taken and giving an idea of the landscape at different
periods, but I haven't yet figured out a good way for recording these as
monuments. My thinking is that they should be monuments so that if someone
searched on e.g. Mesolithic, the landscape type data would show up. I have,
however, not found anything really suitable in the Monument Thesaurus to
record these against. Any ideas on this would be appreciated, even if they
are only your own candidate terms
thanks
best wishes
