medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List,
The suggestions are piling in. Many thanks. Just to clarify matters: I am
looking for background and procedural information about the kind of
establishment set up to provide a home to death for (eg) retired clergy, or
good persons of this town, or similar people: that is, on entry at least
they wd be the reasonably fit elderly, but having been accepted they cd
expect nursing care as long as it was necessary, and support for a Christian
death, with no intention of being tipped out onto the street when someone
decided they were cured, or of being shut away on the outskirts of the town.
I have 'always known'-- that is, I picked up the idea too long ago to have
any idea of the source-- that a condition of entry to this kind of
foundation was often or usually to take an active part in its daily prayers
as long as one was able, and to pray in particular for the founder and
his/her family. The Scots term seems to have been 'bedehouse' which reflects
this.
So while leper-houses, and hospitals s.s., are a closely related topic, they
aren't quite what I am looking for.
In fact I think Sarah Salih's suggestion--
> Goodall, John A. A. God's house at Ewelme : life,
> devotion and architecture in a fifteenth-century almshouse.
> Ashgate : Aldershot,: 2001
is the title I had seen. I now recall the place I must have seen it, and
also that my mind that day was full of my day job (palaeontology) and
therefore focused on Chinese Jurassic dino-birds, so that having looked at
the price (£55) I failed to make a note of the rest of the details. It looks
as if inter-library loans is the way to go...
Many thanks for all the suggestions. I shall pursue them with vigour.
Best wishes,
Pat
