University of Nottingham: School of Computer Science and Information
Technology
PhD studentship in collaboration with Transport Research Laboratory (TRL
Ltd)
A methodology for evaluating the distraction potential of information and
communication technologies in cars
The widespread introduction of advanced computers and communications-based
systems within cars will provide a range of applications to the everyday
driver, both driving-related (e.g. navigation, travel and traffic
information, collision warnings, alertness and monitoring) and non-driving
related (e.g. email, web browsing, entertainment). Clearly, there is a
danger that drivers of the future will be overwhelmed by all the new
information and services on offer within their vehicles. This PhD will
develop a methodology for assessing the distraction potential of new
technology within cars. In contrast with current resource-intensive methods
(e.g. road trials), the approach adopted will be practical and aims to be of
particular use in the formative design process.
Applicants should have a good first degree in human factors/ergonomics,
psychology, computing/computer science (with a strong HCI component), or
electrical/vehicle engineering (with a strong human factors/ergonomics
component). The successful candidate will receive an annual stipend of
12,000 pounds per year and home tuition fees will be paid by the grant. The
student will be based in Nottingham for the majority of the duration of the
studentship, but will spend up to 3 months of each year based at TRL (in
Crowthorne, Berkshire) working on PhD-related work, e.g. user trials and
system evaluations.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr G. Burnett, tel: 0115 951 3357 or
