IUI-CADUI'04 - Workshop
Exploring the design and engineering of Mixed Reality Systems
(Funchal, Island of Madeira, Portugal, January 13th, 2004)
http://www.similar.cc/mixer/

(Funchal, January 13-16, 2004)

Important dates:
Submission of abstracts: October 15th 2003
Submission of papers: October 31st 2003
Notification of acceptance: November 30th 2003
On-Line Publication: December 17th 2003
Workshop January 13th 2003

Motivation
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is no longer restricted to simple
interactions between users and computers via keyboard and screen.
Interactive systems take advantage of new ways of communication, of mobile
technologies, of new interaction devices, etc. Currently one of the most
challenging aspects of interactive systems development is the integration of
the physical and digital worlds in a smooth and usable way. This fusion
involves the design and development of "mixed reality systems", including
augmented reality, augmented virtuality, augmented video, and tangible
systems. The diversity of terms used to denote these systems is evidence
both of the amount of research activity in the field and the lack of a
common conceptual framework for that activity.

Many "one shot" systems have been developed in which reusability and
incremental development of Mixed Reality (MR), whether they are Augmented
Reality (AR) or Augmented Virtuality (AV) systems, have not reached a
reasonable state to build upon. Existing practice does not provide any
conceptual guidance for addressing specific challenges of mixed interface
design. The evolution of concepts raised by these new families of systems
remains scarce. Research into software structures, design methods and design
support tools for mixed reality systems is still in its infancy.

Consequently, we believe that an opportunity exists now to bring together
researchers in this area to identify and articulate the key research
challenges for the design and engineering of mixed reality systems. By
clarifying and systematising these challenges, we can improve our own
understanding of the current state of the field, stimulate research
activity, especially collaboration, and help establish the design of MR
systems as a distinct research area.

Outcomes
In order to identify the foundations of MR systems to rely upon, there is a
need to gather the knowledge acquired so far so as to create a body of
reusable knowledge for existing and future systems. This body of knowledge
should cover MR design issues, identify key research challenges in terms of
design methods and tools, build a corpus of usability knowledge to be
integrated (e.g., usability guidelines, design heuristics, properties). This
workshop is intended to capture and establish links among current and future
issues related to usability centered design, and to durable, stable and
incremental development of such systems. The workshop will also offer an
excellent atmosphere to exchange ideas, concepts, and research results
between different research branches of MR.

One goal of this workshop is also to produce a white paper of this new field
containing a research agenda based on the state of the art. The research
agenda should identify yet under-explored issues and the state of the art
should establish a clear understanding of existing research and development
as well as a research agenda for mixed reality systems. Design being an
essentially multidisciplinary research topic, we hope to attract
participants from a wide range of areas of expertise.

Topics of Interest
In this one-day workshop, we invite contributions, which discuss
methodological, technical, application-oriented and theoretical aspects of
the design of MR systems. These topics include, but are not limited to:

MR system design

-Functional and non-functional requirements
-Design-oriented concepts and models
-Design methods (including approaches to ensure a systematic exploration of
design options)
-Computer-based design tools (including tools for capturing usage data /
usability knowledge)
-Design patterns (including interaction patterns)

MR system engineering
-Software architecture
-Notations and models for specifying Mixed Reality software
-Computer supported tools to develop MR systems

MR systems evaluation
-Usability factors
-Adaptation and identification of ergonomic/HCI criteria and principles
-Recommendations and usability guidelines
-Tools for capturing usability knowledge
-Evaluation of users performance
-Experimental studies

Application-oriented issues, especially arising from new devices, techniques
or environments, including
-Portable, teleportable, and migratable systems
-Distributed systems
-Systems involving non-traditional interaction devices (e.g. foot mouse,
lingual interface)
-Collaborative MR systems
-Contextual displays
-Adaptation of MR systems

Submission procedure
All submissions must be maximum 8 (eight) pages in the standard ACM format
which will be reviewed by an international program committee.

We will encourage papers that present design issues or capture a design
problem linked to one of the four topics (design, engineering, evaluation,
application-oriented issues). Papers presenting a design experience related
to MR design, a specific tool or method, or the results of a user-study,
without quoting relevant research challenge might be rejected we do not want
this workshop to be a miniconference in the area, with people reporting on
their current work.
Authors of papers must submit abstracts of their papers by October 15th,
2003, followed by the papers themselves by October 31st, 2003.

All submissions must follow the ACM standard paper format
(http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigchi/chipubform/) and be submitted electronically
in PDF format to the workshop co-chairs ([log in to unmask]).

Authors are requested to prepare submissions as close as possible to final
camera-ready versions.

All papers accepted for the workshop will first be published in on-line
proceedings of the workshop. It is likely that the proceedings will be
published at
http://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/Publications/CEUR-WS/index.html.

Provided that accepted papers are substantive both in quantity and quality,
it is expected that revised versions of selected papers will form chapters
of a book entitled Designing Mixed Reality Systemsedited by the workshop
organisers. The white paper will serve as an introductory chapter of the
book. This book will be submitted to the Kluwer International Series in HCI
(http://www.wkap.nl/prod/s/HCIS).

The white paper can be also submitted separately to an international
journal, like Springer-Verlag Virtual
Reality(http://link.springer.de/link/service/journals/10055/about.htm).

 Complementary workshop
Another workshop occurring during this conference is about User Interfaces
for ubiquitous systems and their architecture. The title of this workshop is
"Multi-User and Ubiquitous User Interfaces (MU3I)". In this workshop, the
word designis used in a different meaning, denoting the outer appearance and
interaction concept, instead of the architecture and development process.
Organizing Committees of MU3I and MIXER feel that these workshops have a
clear dividing line but complementary nature.

If you wish to have more information about this second workshop, please
refer to their web-site and call for participation.
