medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. September) is the feast day of:
Charbel (d. 107) Charbel was martyred at Antioch (Syria) in Trajan's
reign. His cult is popular among the Maronites.
Romulus (d. c. 112) Romulus was a court official of Emperor Trajan, who
had the gall to rebuke the emperor for persecuting Christians. He was
flogged and then beheaded.
Eudoxius, Zeno, Macarius, and companions. (d. c. 311) This was a group of
soldiers that refused to join in a sacrifice at Melitene (Armenia) and were
executed over a period of two weeks. Legend tells that they numbered over
a thousand.
Urban, Theodore, and companions (d. 370) This is a group of eighty priests
and clerics of Constantinople. They are victims of Arian persecution, left
to die on a burning ship for appealing to the Arian emperor Valens against
persecution of catholic Christians.
Genebald of Laon (d. c. 555) Genebald was the first bishop of Laon, a
relative of St. Remigius (who consecrated him). G. was married and,
despite church law, continued to live with his wife after his consecration.
This caused a scandal. G. then resigned and spent seven years as a
penitential hermit (my source doesn't say what happened to his wife).
Bertin the Great (d. c. 709) Bertin was from the region of Constance. He
became a monk at Luxeuil and then went to the Pas-de-Calais as a
missionary. He became the first abbot of St. Omer's new monastery of
Sithiu (later renamed St-Bertin), and went on to found several other
abbeys.
Albert of Pontida (d. 1095) Albert was a fighting man from Bergamo. He
was badly wounded and vowed to become a monk if he recovered. When he was
on his feet again, he made a pilgrimage to Compostela and then founded the
monastery of St. James at Pontida (outside Bergamo), affiliating it with
Cluny. Pontida, by the way, is still an active monastery.
Lorenzo Giustiniani (d. 1455) Lorenzo was born to a noble family in
Venice. He became a canon in Alga when nineteen, and soon built a
congregation around his canonry. In 1433 L. became bishop of Castello---by
a process of diocesan consolidation and transfer he ended up as the first
patriarch of Venice in 1451. He was canonized in 1690, but his cult was
limited to local observance in 1969.
