medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. July) is the feast day of:
Marcian of Iconium (d. 243) Marcian was executed at Iconium in Asia Minor;
his tongue was cut out before execution to keep him from praying aloud.
Benedict of Nursia (d. 550) It feels wrong, but since 1969 this has been
his official feast day. Benedict, who was declared "patron of Europe" in
1964 is celebrated mostly for his monastic rule, which enjoyed such a
massive influence that B's title really makes a lot of sense. According to
Gregory the Great's Life of Benedict (Dialogue #2), Ben went to study in
Rome but gave up in disgust and became a hermit at Subiaco. He founded
monasteries there and at Montecassino.
Leontius the Younger (d. 565) Leontius was a soldier who married and
settled at Bordeaux. He was forced to become bishop and governor of the
city; his wife became a nun.
Drostan (d. c. 610) Drostan was an Irishman. He was a monk at Iona under
Columba, and then first abbot of Deer near Aberdeen. He is regarded as one
of the apostles of Scotland. His holy well is near Aberdour.
John of Bergamo (d. c. 690) John served as bishop of Bergamo (Italy) from
c. 656 until his death. He was a famous scholar and won a reputation
resisting Arians. Tradition makes him a martyr because of an accident-the
letters BM for "bonae memoriae" were added to his name in an early list,
but were misread as "beati martyris."
Abundius of Cordoba (d. 854) Abundius was a parish priest at Ananelos
(near Cordoba) and became one of the martyrs of Cordoba by defending
Christianity before the caliph's tribunal. The caliph didn't appreciate
this. A. was beheaded, and his body fed to dogs (yuck).
Olga of Kiev (d. 969) Olga was duchess of Kiev; after her husband Igor was
assassinated she served as regent for their son. She was baptized at
Constantinople in 958 and tried to introduce Christianity to her country,
but with little success.
